"Dirty" Harry Callahan was one of the first screen characters to embody contemporary fears about crime--and the uncompromising response to it that much of the audience would liked to have seen. Clint Eastwood's laconic rogue cop became an instant screen icon; his catchphrases ("Do you feel lucky?", "Make my day") were and still are endlessly quoted, and he even inspired a futuristic comic-strip counterpart in the person of Judge Dredd. Made at the time when the real "Zodiac" serial killer was terrorising San Francisco, the original Dirty Harry struck a frighteningly realistic note in 1971: aside from Eastwood, director Don Siegel's taught, pacey direction, Lalo Schifrin's nervy jazz score and Andrew Robinson's cackling psycopath "Scorpio" all make a strong impact. Such was the film's success that it gave rise to no less than four sequels, none of which are its equal but all of which get by on the charisma of Eastwood's anti-hero, even when he's increasingly trapped by the character's one-dimensional persona. This five-disc box set contains all the "Harry" movies: Dirty Harry (1971); Magnum Force (1973, with David Soul as a vigilante bike cop); The Enforcer (1976, with Tyne "Lacey" Daly as Harry's new and reluctant partner); Sudden Impact (1983, the weakest of the lot costarring Eastwood's then-partner Sondra Locke) and The Dead Pool (1988, a surprisingly upbeat end to the series). --Mark Walker Synopsis Veteran actor Clint Eastwood stars as inspector 'Dirty' Harry Callahan of the San Francisco Police Department in this iconic series. In THE DEAD POOL a film crew place bets on which celebrities they think will fall foul of a crazed serial killer. In DIRTY HARRY, a tough, unorthodox police detective goes on the trail of a psychotic killer who's been terrorising the city of San Francisco. In MAGNUM FORCE, a police inspector has the grim task of tracking down a killer within police ranks who is cold-bloodedly slaughtering villains. SUDDEN IMPACT sees Dirty Harry investigating a series of brutal murders in a small town. The bloodshed continues with THE ENFORCER, in which an unredeemable individual who enjoys killing teams up with a group of psychopathic hoodlums. |

You've got to ask yourself a question: do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?" Dirty Harry provoked a critical uproar in 1971 for its "fascist" message about the power of one, as it also elevated Clint Eastwood to superstar status through his most enduring screen persona. Harry Callahan (Eastwood, in a role meant for Frank Sinatra) is a sardonic, hard-working San Francisco cop who can't finish his lunch without having to foil a bank robbery with his 44 Magnum, "the most powerful handgun in the world." When hippie-esque psycho Scorpio (Andy Robinson) goes on a killing spree, Harry and new partner Chico are assigned to hunt him down, but not before the Mayor and Lt. Bressler admonish Callahan about his heavy-handed tactics. Racing against a deadline to save a kidnap victim from suffocating to death, and unbothered by the niceties of Miranda rights and search warrants, Callahan brings in Scorpio, only to see him released on technicalities. "The law's crazy," opines Harry in disgust, before taking it upon himself to ensure that Scorpio doesn't kill again. Directed in violent and efficient fashion by Don Siegel, with a propulsive score by Lalo Schifrin, Dirty Harry was the fourth Siegel-Eastwood collaboration after Coogan's Bluff (1968), Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), and The Beguiled (1970). Critics at the time strongly objected to the heroic image of a cop's violations of a suspect's Miranda rights, forcing Siegel and Eastwood to deny that they were right-wing reactionaries.

The second Dirty Harry movie, Magnum Force concerns itself with a vigilante group that has targeted notorious scofflaws for extermination. When a prominent gang boss or drug-runner is set free by the air-headed liberal courts, a covert group of "avengers" is soon on hand to blow the miscreant to bits. While detective Dirty Harry Callahan is no great friend of civil liberties, he is dead set against wholesale murder as a solution to legal loopholes. Discovering that all the killings have been committed by a .357 Magnum, Callahan suspects that his on-the-edge partner, Charlie McCoy (Mitchell Ryan), is responsible. But the answer is less transparent than that, as Harry learns almost at the cost of his own life.

97 min. 3. The Enforcer | |
In this third installment of the Dirty Harry series, Detective Callahan wages war on a terrorist group and his by-the-books superiors. His partner for this mission is a determined female officer who refuses to be bullied by male-chauvinist cops.
Trapped by his image in 1976, Clint Eastwood resurrected his Dirty Harry character for a third go-round (out of a total of five) in The Enforcer, a potboiler of a story in which the San Francisco detective takes on a group of revolutionary kids. Tyne Daly costars as a female cop who partners with the reluctant Harry Callahan, and she does very well by a role created merely to underscore and articulate the hero's various virtues. It's a dull package all around, but inside the wrapping are good performances by the two leads. --Tom Keogh Special Features Commentary by director James Fargo The Business End: Violence in Cinema RT: 30:00 est. Clint Eastwood is Detective Harry Callahan in Sudden Impact, the third sequel to Dirty Harry. This is probably the most violent film of the series. Here the brutal but effective Callahan is looking for a killer who shoots her male victims in the genitals.
Jennifer Spencer (Sondra Locke) is tracking down the people responsible for raping her and her sister 10 years earlier, killing them one by one. Callahan is on the case, but will he stop her from meting out her own brand of justice, which is uncomfortably close to his own? Eastwood himself produced and directed this action-packed film. Fame isn't detective Harry Callahan's style. He dislikes being grouped with a rock star, a film critic and a TV host, all slain celebrities in a macabre betting pool called the Dead Pool. Another name just got added and it's his.
Clint Eastwood returns for his fifth Callahan caper and this time his new partner is a Karate whiz, mafia goons have sworn to snuff him. And in the most amazing San Francisco chase since Bullitt, Harry puts the pedal to the metal to outrun a bomb carrying, Radio controlled toy car. It's also a great showcase for future stars Jim Carrey, playing an ill-fated rock musician, and Liam Neeson as a power-tripping Director. For hard-hitting action, dive into this cool pool!
